Mongolia 2 vs. Philippines 1 (AFC Challenge Cup) - The One Where The Azkals really prove that they are not an offensive team.

*CAN’T FIND SOME PICTURES..OH WELL
The Philippine National Team lost to Mongolia with a score of 2-1 but got to the next group stage by winning through aggregate. The Philippine team look uncoordinated in their attack in the first half but was able to surprise the host on the 3rd minute with a scrappy goal. But with different factors and also some defensive lapse, the Azkals found themselves trailing after halftime to the Blue Wolves and eventually losing the game.
The Azkals fielded a (4-4-1-1) formation with Araneta on top and supported by J. Younghusband. During the first half, the Azkals tried going to the offensive by using wing play and filling up the penalty box with bodies. Instead of using wingers, the offense was dependent with the runs of the wing back, and having no holding midfielders, the team was prone for counter attacks. Even though they were in the offensive, they only produced 1 goal and a few chances and also gave the Mongolians more quality chances at their goal. The Azkals players look lost with their offense as their were tons of players running and seem to be out of position.
This was the cause of the two goals they conceded from dead ball situation, both were from fouls that was necessary to stop the Blue Wolves’ counter attack. The first goal of Mongolia was the fault of the keeper (Sacapano) as his save was sloppy. Instead of catching the ball, he tried to punch away the ball and mishitting it in the process and led to the ball finding the back of the net. The shot came from a tight angle that most keepers would find it easy to save.
The 2nd goal was stupid foul by Sabio as he intentionally fouled the Mongolian player in the box. This was caused by the wrong game plan and formation of the Azkals’ coach as he tried going to the offensive and he paid the price because of that. Del Rosario playing Wingback joined the offense and when the Azkal’s lost possession, the Mongolians dump the ball to their forwards which started the counterattack. With more Blue Wolves attacking than the Azkals defenders, Sabio had to mark two men and when he tried defending one, he was caught of position with a nice through pass by the Mongolian to the winger. He had to race back to the winger and prevent the shot but he was a little to late and fouling the Mongolian winger in the process.
In the 2nd Half, the coach changed his tactics which greatly suited the Azkals’ player. The tactics were more defensive like what McMenemy used for the Suzuki cup that brought the National team success. With the leadership and great defensive plays of Ali Borromeo, the Mongolians only had 1 good chance in the 2nd half, fortunately the shot thit the woodwork.
On top of that, this defensive formation was more productive on the offensive side, as the Azkals barrage the Mongolian defense with numerous chances. By letting the wing backs stay back on defense and having 2 holding midfielders, the Azkals were more fluent as their were tons of space to work and no Azkal player was out of position.
Here is the Match Ratings based on my OWN OPINION (enjoy)
Post Match—It proved again that the lack of quality finishing is hunting the national team again. A defensive formation is more suited for us, as we can’t sacrifice giving up goals or chances because we can’t score one. It’s ok to defend the whole game and just produced 1 great chance but resulting to a goal. It might be boring to watch but this tactic seems to be the most suited for the Azkals

PLAYER NAME | POSITION | SCORE | REMARKS |
Eduard Sacapano | GK | 6.0 | Was at fault with the first goal, but bounce back with a great penalty save but unfortunelty bounced back to the shot taker, played great remaining of the game |
Anton Del Rosario | DF | 5.0 | Playing Wingback, made nice runs but was caught out of position many times during the first half that led to tons of Mongolian counter attacks. |
Jason Sabio | DF | 5.0 | down his man with a silly foul that resulted to a penalty, but solid in the entire game |
Ali Borromeo | DF | 7.0 | The best player for the Azkals, made some nice tackles and defensive stop. Bullied the smaller Mongolian players the entire game. |
Roel Gener | MF | 5.0 | Played Wingback, but with lack of defensive ability, he was exposed by the Mongolian wingers time and time again. |
Ray Jonsson | MF | 4.0 | Was greatly affected by the off-field drama, and it showed. He was slow and was Invisible the whole match |
Phil Younghusband | MF | 6.0 | Made some nice passes, controlled the offense really well, but had trouble keeping the ball |
Simon Greatwich | MF | 5.0 | Quiet during the first half, but made some nice defensive contribution on the 2nd half |
Emilio Caligdong | MF | 6.0 | Run past his defenders, at one point made a nice run passing 3 defenders. His run were nice but was too selfish and didn’t dump the ball to the open man fast enough+ |
James Younghusband | MF | 7.0 | Nice scrappy goal, he was a factor the whole game, caused the Mongolian defense some headaches |
Ian Araneta | FW | 4.0 | Just had 1 quality shot the entire game, Made nice run to open spaces but wasn’t given the ball fast enough |
Yanti Barsales | FW | 4.5 | Came to the 2nd half, didn’t do anything. |

agree ako, we are more suited to play defense than to push our wingbacks, and i think we need to play with a 4-2-3-1 formation because the younghusband brothers are better in the attacking midfield positions rather than theirusual positions (ST, and LW/RW) -ass_expected
