Full name: David de Gea Quintana
Date of birth : 7 November 1990 (age 20)
Place of birth: Madrid, Spain
Height: 1.92 m (6 ft 3 1⁄2 in)
Team: Athletico Madrid (Spanish La Liga)
Playing position: Goalkeeper
Playing Style: Orthodox
Player Comparison: Edwin Van Der Sar

Let me first start, when I first watched football as a kid, I fell in love with Ajax and their exciting football especially their 1994 Champion’s league domination. Among my favorite players, definitely my favorite player of all time is Edwin Van Der Sar as I followed his career from Ajax to Juventus to Fulham and finally Manchester United. And if you ask me, the most important position in a football team is the Goalkeeper because he is the most consistent player game in and game out . You can have a high prolific attacking players but if you leak goals left and right, what’s the point!? This was the main problem of Manchester United through ought the years before the big Dutchman came, their team was made with the best players in the world  but lack presence between the post (Fabian Barthez, I will never forget you and your stupid decisions to charge the ball, lol) and they struggled because of that.

Sir Alex’ wishes all his past goalkeepers were this good looking

If you have follow football news religiously, you know that this will be Edwin Van Der Sar’s last season, and among all the players that are rumored to replace him as Man U’s main shot stopper, and in my opinion, David De Gea would be the best fit.

De Gea the heir to Van Der Sar?!

I first saw David De Gea, 2 years ago when he debut against F.C Porto (Champion’s league), and been a huge fan ever since, which they lost but I was impressed with his athleticism and positioning, and on top of that he was just 18 years old. I was glad when Quique Flores decided to let David De Gea be the starter for the rest of that season, and David proved that he was the right choice by leading Atletico Madrid to a victorious Uefa Europa League campaign and also proving solid on games against big teams.

Reflex and Athleticism is just world class

Standing at 6’3-6’4, David De Gea is athletic and if you ask me, he reminds me of a young Edwin Van Der Sar as they have both the similar frame and playing style. In fact, among Atletico supporters and his teammates, he is known as David Van Der Gea because of his similarity to the Manchester United’s custodian Edwin Van Der Sar. Both David De Gea and Edwin Van Der Sar uses an orthodox playing style, where they don’t charge at forwards that much and stay between the post as long as possible, and both of them have the ability to easily parry the high velocity ball away with using just one hand (both on left or right) which is an underappreciate trait among casual fans.

Has the ability to parry the ball away with both hands

The only drawback that I saw with David De Gea is his ability to read the play, a trait that can only learn from experience. He tends to find himself double guessing whether to charge or to stay put on one on one situations, and if decides to charge, he tends to give out penalties. But at least, he makes it up with a penalty save and is already known as one of the best penalty savers out there in La Liga. With proper coaching, this kid can easily be a beast and be one of the best goalkeepers around especially that he is just 20 years old and his potential is just plain scary.

Just 20 years old, he is already the third best in La Liga behind Victor Valdes and Iker Casillas

He has no cap for the Spain national team since the national team have two of the best proven goalkeepers in the world, it comes as no surprise, but he has drawn interests from Roma and Manchester United and he is Sir Alex’ favorite to replace the Dutchman and have scouted him personally because among all the candidates he is the most promising.
