Inter 2 vs. Schalke 5 (UCL 1st Leg)- The One Where Italian Defense is Now A Myth

Edit Post
I was in awe when I was watching this match, Schalke dominated the second half by pushing the ball on the flanks with no support from Inter’s attacking midfielders, it was left to Julio Cesar and his Defense to stop Schalke’s attack, which by the way, resulted to one of the worst defensive performance this season. Inter’s defense was unorganized, slow and was simply overpowered by the small Schalke’s offense. Raul turned back time and channeled his prime form, and Edu, the former Suwon Bluewing, was the best player in the game with 2 nice goals to his credit.

Inter playing an attacking formation of 4-2-1-2-1, with Diego MIlito on top and Wesley Sneijder and Samuel Eto’o playing Trequartistas. Eto’o never looked comfortable playing on the left side, and wasn’t able to do anything creative. But the biggest blunder in Leonardo’s tactics was he opt to do more attacking than defending, as a result, all the midfielders were stuck on the other half waiting for the ball for a quick counter attack. This is a good strategy if your defense can play their part but it wasn’t the case. Chivu was sent off again, is second red card in less than 5 days, and was beaten time and time again, the same goes to Ranocchia and Zanetti. Maicon was a shadow of his former self, as he gave up the ball constantly and was nowhere to be found on defense. The 5 goals that Inter allowed, was surprisingly, wasn’t Julio Cesar’s fault as his defense crumbled and just failed him. 8 goals allowed in the past 2 games is just plainly bad, and Leonardo’s choice of formation and tactics seems to be is not going well with Inter’s fans.

Schalke with their traditional 4-4-2 was simply outstanding, they had 7 chances in the game and 5 of those found the back of the net. Raul and Edu just outmuscled and did some intelligent runs and were rewarded with their effort. Little Dynamite, Jefferson Farfan, was his usual self as he caused trouble with his pace and his ability to find the open man. Schalke’s defense were shaky during the first half but found their bearing on the 2nd half as Neuer was his typical self, saving shot after shot.

This is a huge obstacle to climb for Inter, allowing 5 away goals is no laughing matter, as they now faced Schalke in their home stadium and with Manuel Neuer between the post, their chances of getting to the next stage is between slim and impossible. They will need to win by 4 goals, if they want to qualify to the next round. Schalke just need to play their game. It seems that Schalke’s will be responsible for the first upset in the last 8, will there be more to come?
Italian defense, where!?!

When will this end

Old yet still a monster on the big stage
