As I predicted, this match was the most competitive among all the quarter final matches. Both of these team are evenly matched from the defense to the offense, and usually a bad performance from 1 player is enough to separate both sides. And unfortunately this was the case, Bosingwa played an average game but he was caught sleeping in one moment and that led to the goal for the Red Devils. One thing that caught my eye is that the Red Devils were superior in the midfield as the ageless Ryan Giggs and Carrick pick apart the Chelsea Midfield with their slick passing and smart runs which was rewarded with the lone goal of the game, a nice lob pass to Giggs by Carrick and Giggs finding an open Rooney for the goal. And once again, Wayne Rooney proved again that (in my opinion) he is the best striker around, as he troubled the Chelsea defense with his size and strength and also his ability to find open teammates.

A Hungry Rooney is maybe, the best player in the world

Playing their usual (4-4-2) with Hernandez and Rooney on top, the  Red Devils were happy with the return of Rio Ferdinand as he played an inspiration game as he,along with Vidic, harassed the Chelsea forwards and intimidated the hell out of them. Valencia played a great game even though he had to fill the shoes of Rafael at right back, both him and Nani troubled Chelsea with their counter attack that created great chances. Patrick Evra is the lucky man tonight, as his reckless tackle that should have been a penalty was ignored by the referee and saving the game for United. Edwin Van Der Sar again performed great, as he made a spectacular save to deny Torres’ first goal

Chelsea also played an (4-4-2) formation but the pairing of Drogba and Torres was not to be desired as instead of working together, the chemistry wasn’t there and they just looked like two lone strikers finding the goal. The Chelsea midfield was outplayed by the Red Devils midfield as they never found the killer pass that would cause the Red Devils trouble. Zhirkov was nowhere to be found the whole game, and surprisingly, Fernando Torres was more effective than Drogba as he almost found the back of the net twice just denied by Edwin Van Der Sar on both occasion.

Definitely a Penalty, Lucky break for United

Chelsea can still win in the next leg but they should invade the Theater of dreams with all guns firing as they can’t afford to commit any mistake. Manchester United is fortunate in leaving Stamford Bridge without conceding a penalty and also with a win. They just need to be their usual self the next game and they have this thing in the bag.
